Chapter 20

What should one expect when going to a slave market in the succubi’s capital? Too many things in the city had exceeded my expectations, so I knew it would be different. But even preparing myself wasn’t enough.

The ceiling was only a few stories tall, but the grand hall seemed to go on forever. There were round daises lined up in rows where three stairs lead to the top platform. On top of each was a different person from a large variety of races even if humans were the most common at a glance. These were the people available for purchase, but they had no chains and those closest to the entrance looked like they wanted to be there. On the contrary, they were like living statues of legendary figures.

The first guy that caught my attention was what looked like a half-giant orc. He’d been sitting on a throne of bone and thick fur. As soon as he saw us, he rose to his feet. His size and musculature were so impressive that he was the first guy I’d seen in the Underworld where I almost believed that his level didn’t matter. He was even allowed to carry a spear and club of bone.

He cast such a striking figure, that I nodded to him.

The guy revealed his vicious underbite and large fangs.

“Don’t acknowledge the slaves unless you intend on purchasing them,” Virginie insisted through mind-speak. She hadn’t left us for more than a few minutes and even beat us here. “It’s considered rude. You’ll get their hopes up.”

Who said I didn’t want to hire him? And why were they concerned with being kind to the people they intended to sell?

On the next platform closest to the entrance was a human with white hair and a handlebar mustache. He was sitting at a desk with a pile of mana tablets wearing a dark grey robe. Instead of rising to his feet when noticing us, he just kept on reading.

I found a plaque at the bottom of the stairs of his dais.

Level: 65,000

Master Rank Jeweler

Master Rank Magic Contracts

Master Rank Clothier

Master Cosmetologist

Grandmaster Rank Artificer

Price: 699,999 Dark Coins

“Artificer? As in inventor?” I said to Aeris through mind-speak.

“I think so,” she replied from my side in her sprite form.

Shamash cut us off. “This human is one to consider, but the real question you have to ask yourself is how he earned the Grandmaster Rank. It would be related to his other professions. Did he invent new jewelry, contracts, garments, or makeup? It’s possible he applied this skill to all of his professions. If so, that speaks well of his ability to use his skills in new professions. But even then, do you need him?

“And let me make one thing perfectly clear. Any of the servants here are the kind treated exceptionally well by their masters. Any grandmaster, regardless of the magic school or profession, is greatly praised.”

Virginie began to explain when she saw Aeris’s and my interest in the old man. “They usually put men and women that are often the most sought after near the entrance.
